Environmentality, 22 February 2012

Dear Environmentality listeners,

This show started with a question for Smokey: if you could be an animal, what animal would you be? Not surprisingly, Smokey's choice was the Bonobo, previously known as the pygmy chimpanzee. This certainly did not catch Jaime by surprise, what about you? Leave us a comment here letting us know what animal you would be or what animal reminds you most of our presenters...

In any case this was just a way to introduce another terrific guest, Kiam Yoong, Environmental Sustainability Manager at Zoos Victoria. Kiam started his career as an engineer in Malaysia but watching the level of environmental destruction that was prevalent at time inspired him to move elsewhere and to start a Masters in Cleaner Production that later led to a career in sustainability.

As Kiam was explaining the link between conservation, wider environmental sustainability and the need for Zoos to walk the talk, it all made a lot of sense, but we certainly didn't know that Zoos Victoria was such a Sustainability Champion. Its achievements in waste reduction, water and energy efficiency are most impressive, as are its ambitious sustainability targets which include:

  • to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2012.
  • to develop a Green Procurement Program.
  • to commit to Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) principles in the development of buildings, enclosures and infrastructure.
  • to support staff at work and at home in Environmental Sustainability training and development.
Apart from all this, Kiam brough a bit of music with him, mainly Santana, which he has loved ever since he bought his first vinyl back in the early 70's.

So another great guest in what has proven to be a very interesting February for Environmentality!

Listen to the show!
